Episode 822 - Mr. Da'Mon Stith


Mr. Da'Mon Stith is a martial arts practitioner, instructor, and president of the Historical African Martial Arts Association.

I knew that I wanted to be a Martial Arts instructor. I didn't know how I was gonna get there, you know? Because I had just stepped away from the class. But at that point in time I knew that was something that I wanted to do.

Martial arts practices vary across the globe, each country contributing its unique style. While popular Asian martial arts are widely known and celebrated, African martial arts remain relatively obscure. President of the Historical African Martial Arts Association, Mr. Da’Mon Stith has dedicated his passion to the exploration and preservation of African martial arts. Mr. Stith’s interest in African martial arts was sparked when he discovered that such practices existed and were not well-known.

Mr. Stith’s interest in martial arts began at the age of six, when his father gifted him a toy sword. As a child, he would watch martial arts movies and then reenact them with other kids in his neighborhood. However, due to asthma, he turned to martial arts after playing football. From toy sword, Mr. Stith is the Chief Instructor and Founder of Guild of the Silent Sword.

In this episode, Mr. Da’Mon Stith provides insights into his journey of exploring martial arts and his desire to learn more about the cultural and historical significance of African martial arts. He highlights the importance of community and collaboration in martial arts and emphasizes the need to support and learn from each other. Kera Radke is a Martial Arts practitioner and instructor. Kera is a co-owner of Lake Zurich Family Martial Arts in Illinois.

I've also had like some super shy kids, totally surprise me and turn out to be amazing instructors as well. If you want be a teacher, I can make you a teacher. I don't care if you're shy, if you’re extroverted, whatever the case may be. If you really have that desire, I'll make it happen.

Training in Martial Arts as a hobby is quite common but making a career out of it is another level. Kera Radke's passion for martial arts started as a hobby but eventually became a career. After becoming a school teacher, Kera continued to teach martial arts as a part-time hobby. Eventually, Kera took a leave of absence from teaching and taught at her friend's school for several years before finally opening her own martial arts school in 2017.

The dream of becoming a Martial Artist usually starts with the love for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles which is the case for Sensei Gage Hanlon. Sensei Hanlon recalls how he got started in martial arts as a kindergartener, when he wanted to be a Ninja turtle. His love and obsession for martial arts, which drove him to train consistently and compete in tournaments.

Presently, Hanlon is the owner and head instructor of Hanlon's Martial Arts Academy in Whitewater, Wisconsin. He is a 5th-degree black belt in Taekwondo and a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
