Episode 580 - Sensei Aaron Cass


Sensei Aaron Cass is a Martial Arts practitioner and chief instructor at the Portsmouth Aikido in New Hampshire.

Aikido sort of demands that you are able to take a potentially violent, dangerous, difficult situation and find a real resolution. I feel like it’s a really nice art to practice for something that integrates with my life.

Some of us might have started their journey into the Martial Arts when they see their first kata or roundhouse kick but our guest today started when he first saw an Aikido roll. Sensei Aaron Cass’ friend demonstrated an Aikido roll and he immediately got into the dojo when he got the chance. Presently, Sensei Aaron Cass is the Chief Instructor at the Portsmouth Aikido, an educational non-profit organization dedicated to practicing and teaching Aikido. Listen to learn more!

Kyoshi John Payton is a martial arts practitioner and instructor. He is the Director of the American Shobukan Association in Massachusetts.

The way things are now, the division, and the things that we have now, at the end of the day, we can still put on our belt and gi. We can all just go train and it doesn’t matter who you voted for, the color of your skin, or what religion you have, we all just get together and do our thing. None of those things matter.

Kids’ classes are typically on Saturday morning and I would show up a little bit hungover. But, these kids would look at me as somebody really special. Eventually, these kids would give me the self-worth that I didn’t give myself. That changed my life forever.

With only 50 bucks and nowhere to go in New Zealand, the concern of getting harassed by gangs turned him to train Martial Arts. Sensei Greg Williams, a self-confessed Wally Jay fan, trained in Jiujitsu in 1988 made a complete turnaround from a life of alcohol and drugs. When Sensei Williams’ teacher asked him to teach kids at that time, it would change his life forever.
