Shihan Charles Garrett is a practitioner and instructor of Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate-do based in California.

To me, martial arts is the best thing to keep us from having to get in a fight because our energy tells us automatically where the disturbance is. On the other hand, we have a requirement of being a guardian because when you really master the martial arts, you truly become a guardian of where you live. You have to learn to protect those that need to be protected because they don't have their own ability.

If you're going to learn martial arts for the first time in a military setting, you're in to get the real pain. Shihan Charles Garett learned martial arts through his drill Sargeant while stationed in Japan and eventually studying under Grandmaster Hohan Soken. Ms. Shirley Meier is a martial arts practitioner and instructor. She is an author of science fiction and fantasy from Canada.

The difference between a soldier and a warrior is that a soldier just does what they're told, trusting the chain of command. A warrior makes their own decisions. Is this worth fighting over? Is this worth going to hell for?

Ms. Shirley Meier - Episode 510

Most of us learned martial arts because we need self-defense but there are some who learned for a whole different reason. Ms. Shirley Meier learned martial arts because she needed it for the novel she's writing at the time and as the cliche goes, the rest is history. Today, she is still writing novels and teaches karate for free. The discussion in this episode touches a lot of topics so listen to learn more!
